Teaching Philosophy

John Wooden, one of the greatest college basketball coaches ever, has many quotes that summarize my teaching philosophy. These are a few:
“Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”
Success comes from knowing you tried your best. At the Elementary School level, we as Physical Education teachers are teaching lifelong skills that students can use in day-to-day activities. The student's goal should not be to win games; rather, to accomplish whatever goal you have set for yourself. Trying your best weighs far heavier than winning the game. The goal in Physical Education is to boost self esteem and build character. Students also need to learn that living a healthy lifestyle is extremely important so that you can become the best you are capable of becoming. This includes exercising, being physically active and learning, eating right, and following the Food Plate set by the United States Department of Agriculture.
"Young people need models, not critics”
I truly believe that my job as a Physical Educator is to teach students the proper physical and social behavior that allows students to respect themselves and their peers, along with valuing physical activity for health, enjoyment, challenge, and social interaction. I believe in encouraging students to do the best they can, and strive to be the best person they can be. My students are given the opportunity to get to know the real me. I talk with them about my life and my interests. I share with them my passions and goals. I have pictures in my office of my family so that the students know that I am not just their teacher, but someone they can relate to. I want my students to look up to me and strive to be the best they can be. I am a role model for my students. My class is a positive environment. It is somewhere that students know they should try their best, and as long as they do, I will be proud of them.
"Don't measure yourself by what you have accomplished, but by what you should have accomplished with your ability"
In Elementary School Physical Education, I strive to focus on students health, character, and skill improvement. Following the National Standards for Physical Education, I believe students need to demonstrate competency in motor skills, movement concepts, principles, strategies, and tactics to learning physical activities. Students should take pride in participating in physical activity and achieving and maintaining a healthy level of physical fitness. Every person is not built the same way. Some of us are tall, some of us are short. Some of us have natural athletic ability. My Physical Education philosophy is to teach students to strive to do the best their ability allows. It is important to learn the skills necessary to be successful on and off the field. It is okay to fail, but the important thing is to pick yourself up and try again. I believe in measuring yourself on what you have accomplished with your ability.
